Moving On

Hi. I’m Joe. 

I’ve been working with coffee for a little while now, and I think I’d like to start writing some thoughts down. For more than a year, I’ve been working for Volcano Coffee Works, in a big diverse role, working where needed [you know, I really like working with small businesses, especially craft based, family run small businesses. I keep getting drawn to these places, and end up getting to work with people who inspire me]. While there, I’ve found out that I’m pretty good at logistics and operations, and love being in an impossible situation and then finding a different way out. This has been most of my job, but I have also been fortunate enough to learn an enormous amount about coffee [and as trite as it sounds, to be completely freaked out by how much I don’t know! I don’t know if I’m more awed by how much others know, especially about the growing end of the industry, or by how much of what we do, as an industry feels like groping in the dark]. I’ve done a little roasting, and a lot of tasting and talking.

A month ago I quit, and this week I’ve got my last day.

I’m sure I’ll talk more about leaving later, but basically it was time for a change. I’m feeling pretty excited, but also quite scared. 

I hope that this blog will give me space to keep thinking and talking about coffee, and ways and places we make it.
